Student Electives

Medical Student Electives

POH Regional Medical Center is a major teaching affiliate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM), Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB), and TOURO University. POH offers base hospital experiences and graduate education electives to third- and fourth-year medical students. Electives are available in a number of clinical disciplines at POH, its two ambulatory sites, and its affiliates.

The electives offered by POH are briefly described on the pages above.

The elective experience reflects POH's strong commitment to the continuity of care philosophy. Medical students engage in a broad range of experiences, including outpatient and inpatient case management, team projects, case presentations, daily rounds, individual patient assignments, on-call rotations, departmental and teaching conferences, and supplemental reading assignments. Unless otherwise indicated, the electives are two to four weeks in duration. Further information is available through our office. Refer to Graduate Medical Education section for contact information.

POH Regional Medical Center Clerkship Guidelines

Although POH Regional Medical Education has no formal application form or procedure for requesting and scheduling elective rotations at POH, some general guidelines are provided below to ensure that the required documentation is provided to Medical Education prior to each rotation's commencement.

To schedule a rotation, medical students and/or their school representative contact our office to check for availability of a particular rotation service in a particular time period.  If a slot is available, student information is collected and a rotation is reserved.

To complete the rotation approval process, students or site coordinators must submit the following documentation to the Medical Education Department at least six weeks before the rotation begins.

  • Letter of Good Standing from medical student's educational institution
  • Proof of Liability Insurance
  • Immunization Records
  • Schedule Adjustments which may be needed during the rotation for purposes of didactics, travel, etc.
  • Additionally, some elective clerkships require additional information (e.g., Curriculum Vitae)

Housing is available at no charge to visiting non-base medical students.  You may reserve a room when you reserve a rotation slot.

Meals are provided at the hospital cafeteria at no charge.  (POH Student ID badge is required at all time when on the premises)

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Individual medical schools occasionally have special procedures and/or forms that need to be completed to request rotations.  Please contact your school if you have questions about specific requirements."
