The Critical Care/Pulmonary Medicine training program runs for three (3) years. The goal of the program is to allow the trainee to acquire expertise as a specialist and consultant in the field of critical care and pulmonary medicine, providing definitive diagnosis and recommending appropriate treatment for the critically ill patient, as well as to demonstrate the application of osteopathic principles and practice as it relates to critical care medicine. In addition, this program provides extensive exposure to patients with pulmonary disease.

The fellow works in association with other specialists in internal medicine, anesthesia, surgery, neurosurgical, and pediatric intensive care specialists to expose him/her to the broad base necessary for the practice of critical care medicine and to maintain his/her skills in general internal medicine.

The fellow must become proficient in a variety of procedures including bronchoscopy - both therapeutic as well as diagnostic, swan-ganz catheter, arterial line, chest tubes, pleural biopsy, thoracocentesis, stress testing, and cardiac catheterization.

The fellowship offers considerable opportunity to treat patients with obstructive airway disease, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, pulmonary embolism, immunologic and occupational lung disease, and pulmonary infections of all types. The program also teaches comprehensive care of surgical, neurosurgical, and trauma patients.

Fellows work with the pulmonary function laboratory, which performs virtually all pulmonary diagnostic testing. As a result, residents gain skill at lung function interpretation and laboratory equipment management. Exercise and metabolic studies are standard.
