Balance is a key component of leading a healthy lifestyle, and is defined as the ability to maintain an upright posture, whether you are using a walker or cane, or neither.
The ability to maintain balance is a complex process that involves three major components:
- Sensory System -- to see, hear and feel
- Brain -- to process information
- Muscles and Joints -- to coordinate movements
Consult your physician for a physical therapy referral if you have experienced:
- a recent fall
- dizzy spells
- unsteadiness on your feet
McLaren Central Michigan's Rehabilitation Services Team uses a hands-on approach to diagnose any problems and to establish a treatment program. This program is used to improve the patient's functional level and decrease any dizziness or other symptoms. The patient's physician will be updated on any progress on a regular basis.
This program also can be helpful for patients with other problems including:
- neuropathy
- inner ear dysfunction
- head injury
- stroke
- other multiple conditions affecting balance
