"This was our best year ever," said Dr. Tressa Gardner, Director of Emergency Services at McLaren-Oakland. "We had more students than in previous years, and the community was more engaged as well. We had students from all over Oakland County. I was quite amazed at the wonderful turnout and community support."
Seven McLaren-Oakland doctors donated their time to provide the physicals. Students also received back-to-school supplies and learned important nutritional information to improve their physical endurance and sports performance while taking part in athletic activities.
"This event is great for the community," said Loretta G. Smith, V.P., Michigan CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) Manager, Corporate Compliance & Public Affairs, of Comerica Bank. "Keeping our children happy and healthy is important, and Comerica is excited to partner with McLaren-Oakland. We're reinvesting in the communities where we do business."
"The McLaren-Oakland Riley Foundation and the physicians at McLaren-Oakland are proud to present the McLaren-Oakland Children's Sports Health Fair for the fifth year in a row," said Teresa A. Rodges, Executive Director of the McLaren-Oakland Riley Foundation. "Studies show that childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years. To fight this epidemic, we want every child to have the opportunity to incorporate exercise into their everyday life."
Various little league teams came out in support of the event including the Pontiac Sharks Baseball Team and the Pontiac Panthers football players & cheerleaders. Daniel Sowell, a Pontiac Panthers Football Coach, said his organization has been sending players to the McLaren-Oakland Children's Clinic for the past five years.
"This helps us out a lot," Sowell said. "It takes the pressure off of our parents to get physicals for our athletes. They can't practice or participate in any sport without a physical, so this is definitely needed to keep our kids active."
Andre Micou, Public Relations and Community Involvement Representative with Genisys Credit Union, added: "McLaren-Oakland is doing great things in the community, and we're happy to be a part of that."
